Relations between Rwanda and Denmark are gaining new momentum as Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, continues his official visit to Kigali aimed at deepening cooperation across diplomacy, investment and innovation.

A central highlight of the visit is the anticipated official inauguration of Denmark’s embassy in Rwanda, a step that underscores Copenhagen’s strategy to expand its diplomatic engagement and partnerships across Africa.

On Monday, the Danish minister visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where he was briefed on the history of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and paid tribute to the victims. The visit highlighted Denmark’s solidarity with Rwanda and recognition of the country’s journey of resilience and reconstruction.

Rasmussen is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, focusing on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment and knowledge exchange. The discussions are expected to explore ways to boost private-sector partnerships and create new opportunities for businesses from both countries.

During his stay, the minister joined a town hall session at Norrsken East Africa alongside Juliana Muganza of the Rwanda Development Board, where entrepreneurs and startup founders discussed how small and medium enterprises are driving job creation, innovation and economic growth in Rwanda. Participants also addressed challenges including access to finance, market linkages, skills development and scaling businesses.

He is further expected to meet Danish investors operating in Rwanda to discuss opportunities and challenges facing European businesses, as well as visit the University of Rwanda to engage students on international study prospects and academic cooperation.

Officials say the visit signals growing confidence between the two nations and a shared commitment to expanding cooperation that supports entrepreneurship, education, investment and climate-friendly growth.
