Senegalese President Faye appoints Ahmadou Lô as new Prime Minister amid political tensions
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lô as the country’s new Prime Minister, replacing Ousmane Sonko, who was removed from office earlier this month following growing tensions within the ruling leadership.
The announcement confirming Lô’s appointment was released late on May 25, 2026. The 60-year-old is a respected expert in economics, banking regulations, and financial markets.
Before becoming Prime Minister, Lô served as Secretary-General of the Senegalese Government after his appointment in April 2024. A year later, he was promoted to Minister attached to the Presidency, overseeing projects linked to Senegal’s long-term development agenda known as Senegal 2050.
According to the Presidency, Lô played a significant role in implementing governance and economic reforms introduced after President Faye succeeded former President Macky Sall in 2024.
Widely regarded as a close ally of President Faye, Lô dismissed claims that his appointment was influenced by personal ties, insisting that decisions made by the President are guided solely by national interests.
His predecessor, Ousmane Sonko, was dismissed on May 22 after reports emerged of disagreements with President Faye over strategies to revive Senegal’s debt-burdened economy. The two leaders, once considered close political partners, have recently shown signs of strained relations.
Sonko is expected to officially enter Senegal’s National Assembly as a Member of Parliament on May 26, with analysts suggesting he has strong chances of becoming Speaker due to the ruling party’s parliamentary majority.
Observers say Sonko’s potential rise to the speakership could increase political pressure on President Faye’s administration and complicate efforts to push forward the government’s reform agenda.
