President Ruto unveiles new creative economy office at 14th Kalasha awards in Nairobi
President of Kenya William Ruto has announced the establishment of a Creative Economy Office at State House as part of broader efforts to strengthen Kenya’s creative industry and empower youth.
Speaking during the 14th edition of the Kalasha TV, Film Market and Awards held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, President Ruto emphasized that the creative economy is central to the country’s transformation agenda.
He noted that the government has already taken steps to institutionalize the sector, including the creation of a State Department dedicated to the creative economy. The newly announced office at State House will further coordinate efforts and unlock opportunities for young creatives across film, music, gaming, and fashion.
As part of this initiative, key positions will soon be filled, including Director of Gaming, Secretary for Film Services, and Head of Music and Fashion roles expected to drive growth and innovation within the industry.
President Ruto also revealed plans to increase government support by directing 30 percent of public advertising to creative platforms, a move aimed at boosting incomes for artists and content creators.
He called on Parliament to fast-track the Creative Economy Bill 2026 and strengthen copyright laws to ensure that creatives are not only recognized for their work but also protected and fairly compensated.
The Kalasha Awards ceremony, which brings together leading filmmakers and content creators, serves as a major platform to showcase Kenya’s growing creative talent and industry potential.
Congratulating this year’s winners, President Ruto expressed optimism about the future of the sector and announced that State House would bid to host the awards ceremony next year, signaling continued high-level support for the creative economy.
