Political Analyst Slams Gachagua for Skipping Raila Odinga’s State Funeral
Political analyst Obamas Matampash has criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for skipping Raila Odinga’s state funeral, calling it a disappointment to the Mt. Kenya community and questioning his leadership credibility ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political commentator Obamas Matampash has faulted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for failing to attend the state funeral of the late Raila Odinga, calling the move “a disappointment” to the Mt. Kenya community.
Matampash said Gachagua’s absence at the national event sent the wrong message, especially for a leader who has often positioned himself as the political kingpin of the Mt. Kenya region. He noted that the entire country was united in mourning one of Kenya’s most influential statesmen, and such a moment called for unity beyond political lines.
“There was no evident threat to his safety or peace at the ceremony. After all, Raila himself attended funerals of top leaders in Mt Kenya even amid strong political opposition,” Matampash stated.
The political analyst argued that Gachagua’s failure to attend may weaken his standing within the region as the country heads toward the 2027 General Election.
“How will you convince the community to vote for you in 2027 when you failed to show up for them at their hour of need? Those looking to him for political direction may need to reflect carefully on this,” he remarked.
The state funeral, held in honour of Raila Odinga a towering figure in Kenya’s political landscape brought together leaders from across the political divide, international dignitaries, and thousands of mourners. Gachagua’s absence stood out, drawing criticism from various quarters.
Observers say the incident could further complicate his political ambitions in the coming election cycle, particularly in a region where symbolic gestures of unity and respect carry significant weight.
