The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has started a three-day Gender Retreat at the Rwanda Military Academy in Gako, Bugesera District, bringing together senior officers, junior officers, and other ranks from across the force.

Held under the theme “Gender Mainstreaming and Empowerment in the Rwanda Defence Force,” the retreat aims to reinforce ongoing efforts to promote gender equality, inclusion, and institutional empowerment within the military.

Opening the retreat, Reserve Force Chief of Staff Maj Gen Alexis Kagame, speaking on behalf of the RDF Chief of Defence Staff, commended President Paul Kagame, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the RDF, for his continued support in advancing gender equality and equity within the armed forces.

He said the retreat reflects the RDF leadership’s commitment to aligning military institutions with national priorities and international commitments related to gender inclusion and empowerment.

Throughout the three-day program, participants are expected to assess progress made in gender mainstreaming, review implementation of the 2023 Gender Management Policy, and discuss stronger measures to prevent and respond to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) within the RDF and military families.

The discussions are also expected to focus on building a more inclusive and professional force that values equal opportunities and participation across all levels of service.
