Members of the Banyamulenge community living in the United States staged a peaceful protest in Washington, D.C., urging the international community to take action over ongoing violence targeting their relatives in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The demonstration, organized by the Mahoro Peace Association (MPA), drew more than 4,000 participants from across the U.S. Protesters raised concerns about attacks in South Kivu Province, particularly in the Minembwe area, where they say civilians are facing violence, restricted access to essential services, and worsening humanitarian conditions.

Organizers alleged that elements linked to the Congolese military and forces from Burundi are involved in operations affecting Banyamulenge communities in the region’s highlands. They described a situation marked by insecurity, blocked supply routes, and limited access to food and healthcare.

Protesters called on global actors to move beyond statements and take concrete steps to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian access, and support independent investigations into alleged abuses. They emphasized that lasting peace in the Great Lakes region cannot be achieved while communities continue to face violence and displacement.

Similar demonstrations were also reported in Nairobi, where Banyamulenge living in Kenya voiced the same concerns. Participants there called for increased accountability and stronger international engagement to address the situation in eastern DRC.

The protests highlight growing concern among diaspora communities and renewed calls for urgent attention to the security and humanitarian situation in South Kivu.
