Rwanda has achieved a major milestone after its nationally controlled satellite Teleport, overseen by the Rwanda Space Agency (RSA), was awarded a Tier 3 certification by the World Teleport Association (WTA), recognizing it as one of the most advanced satellite communication infrastructures in Sub-Saharan Africa.

A teleport is a ground-based facility equipped with large antennas used to receive and transmit data to and from satellites in space. Rwanda’s facility, located in Mwurire Sector of Rwamagana District, was strategically built in an open area with minimal physical obstructions to ensure optimal satellite signal reception.

The certification, issued on August 3, 2026, places Rwanda’s teleport as the only one in Sub-Saharan Africa to reach this level, and the second in Africa after Egypt. It is also the first teleport in the world managed by a government agency to receive such recognition.

Before the establishment of this facility, Rwanda relied on external partners to access data from its Rwasat-1 satellite launched in 2019. The new teleport now enables direct access and efficient management of satellite data within the country.

The WTA certification evaluates operational performance, reliability, infrastructure quality, and service continuity. The Tier 3 rating indicates high-level operational resilience, meaning the system can continue functioning even during maintenance or upgrades.

The certification is valid for three years and is expected to boost investor confidence in Rwanda’s space and telecommunications sector, while also supporting applications in agriculture, disaster management, climate monitoring, aviation, and internet connectivity.

With this achievement, Rwanda strengthens its position as an emerging leader in space infrastructure and advanced communication technologies on the African continent.
