Rwanda’s Minister in charge of Emergency Management, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Albert Murasira, on Friday visited Gisuma Hill located in Shyira Sector, Nyabihu District, where severe soil erosion has affected more than eight hectares of land, posing risks to local communities and damaging infrastructure.

Accompanied by the Mayor of Nyabihu District, Antoinette Mukandayisenga, the minister assessed the extent of the damage and called for urgent, practical solutions. He instructed technical institutions, including the Ministry in charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) and other relevant stakeholders, to develop and implement strong mitigation measures as quickly as possible. The aim is to reduce the current impact and prevent further disasters in the area.

During the same visit, Minister Murasira also toured Jaba village in Mukamira Sector, where 76 houses are under construction for families displaced by floods that struck the region in 2023. The housing project is part of the government’s broader efforts to support affected communities and improve disaster resilience across vulnerable regions.

Authorities emphasized the importance of coordinated action and long-term planning to tackle recurring environmental challenges such as soil erosion and flooding, which continue to threaten livelihoods in Rwanda’s Northern Province.
