On Saturday, May 2, 2026, Rwanda’s security forces deployed in Mocímboa da Praia, located in Cabo Delgado, participated alongside local residents, government officials, and Mozambican security forces in a large-scale community clean-up exercise aimed at improving sanitation and strengthening community relations.

This initiative is part of ongoing civil-military cooperation efforts that Rwanda has been actively promoting since deploying its forces in northern Mozambique. Beyond ensuring security, these forces have also engaged in activities that directly benefit local communities, including health campaigns, infrastructure support, and environmental protection.

Strengthening Community Bonds. The clean-up exercise brought together hundreds of participants who worked collectively to clear waste, clean public spaces, and restore order in key parts of the town. Residents expressed appreciation for the involvement of Rwanda’s security forces, noting that such activities not only improve hygiene but also build trust between civilians and security personnel.

Local authorities highlighted that the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to rebuilding and stabilizing the region, which has faced security challenges in recent years.

Shared Responsibility for Public Welfare. Officials from both Rwanda and Mozambique emphasized that maintaining a clean and healthy environment is a collective responsibility. They encouraged residents to continue embracing community-driven initiatives even beyond organized activities like umuganda.

Rwanda’s security representatives reiterated their commitment to supporting not just peace and stability, but also the overall well-being of the population. They noted that cooperation between citizens and security institutions plays a vital role in achieving sustainable development.

Ongoing Efforts in Cabo Delgado.  Since their deployment, Rwanda’s forces have been instrumental in restoring security in parts of Cabo Delgado, enabling displaced residents to return to their homes and resume normal life. Activities like this clean-up campaign demonstrate a broader approach that combines security operations with community engagement.

As stability gradually returns to Mocímboa da Praia and surrounding areas, such initiatives are expected to continue playing a key role in rebuilding trust, improving living conditions, and fostering long-term peace.
