President Kagame meets President of Togo on Eastern DRC peace efforts
This Friday, 30 January 2026, President Paul Kagame held a bilateral meeting with Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Council of Togo and African Union Lead Mediator on the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) peace process, at Urugwiro Village.
Following their one-on-one discussions, the two leaders met with the AU-appointed Panel of Experts, which includes former African Heads of State:
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo; former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde; former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi; and former Central African Republic President Catherine Samba-Panza.
The talks focused on the security situation in eastern DRC, progress in ongoing diplomatic engagements, and ways to strengthen coordination between regional and continental mediation efforts.
Leaders emphasized the need for a unified and inclusive approach to promote peace, security, and stability across the Great Lakes region.
President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of Togo arrived in Rwanda on Thursday evening, 29 January 2026, for an official working visit. Upon arrival, he was received by Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe.
