The Battle of Bisesero: A New Film Set to Depict the Bravery of Rwandans Who Fought Genocidal Killers in 1994
A new international film titled “The Battle of Bisesero” is set to bring to the global stage a powerful story of Rwandan bravery, following its announcement during a press conference held in Kigali on January 13, 2026.
The film focuses on the story of men and women who fought against Interahamwe militias in the hills of Bisesero during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Despite facing extremely violent attackers, these civilians united and fought tirelessly in an effort to protect their lives. Their courage became a cornerstone of Rwanda’s history in the period following the Genocide.
The production of this film is the result of more than three years of research, visits to historical sites, and conversations with those who know the events well. The creators say their goal is to portray history in a respectful, accurate, and deeply rooted African-led way, ensuring that Rwanda’s story reaches the international community appropriately.
The film is led by a team of renowned experts, including Richard Hall, an Emmy Award-winning producer; Mandla Dube, a celebrated South African filmmaker; and Wale Ojo, a Nigerian actor known for his roles in Breath of Life and Black Earth Rising. Their collaboration is a strong indication that this project will be significant on the global scene.
Before beginning production, the film’s leadership hosted a four-day workshop in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Arts (MOYA), training and engaging with Rwandan actors, filmmakers, and writers. The workshop aimed at strengthening local capacity and preparing what is needed ahead of the filming process.
The Battle of Bisesero will be filmed in Rwanda between April and May 2026 and is expected to serve as a major contribution to preserving and sharing with the world the story of the heroism that took place in Bisesero, ensuring Rwanda’s history is conveyed in an educational and compelling way.
