20 April '2026 Rwandans and friends of Rwanda living in Bruges, Belgium, gathered to mark the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, reaffirming their commitment to preserving its memory and confronting ongoing denial and trivialization observed in parts of Europe and beyond.

The commemoration event was organized in two main parts, reflecting both remembrance and reflection. The first segment featured a solemn remembrance walk through the streets of Bruges. Participants moved together in silence and dignity, honoring the more than one million lives lost during the genocide. The walk served not only as a tribute to the victims but also as a visible message to the international community about the importance of remembering and acknowledging the truth.

The second part of the event focused on speeches and discussions centered on remembrance, unity, and responsibility. Various speakers emphasized the need to educate younger generations about the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi, highlighting that remembrance is a collective duty that helps prevent such atrocities from happening again.

Participants also addressed the persistent issue of genocide denial and minimization, particularly in some Western countries. They stressed the importance of standing firm against misinformation and distortion of historical facts, calling on governments, institutions, and individuals to take a clear stance against such acts.

The gathering further served as a moment of solidarity among Rwandans in the diaspora and their friends, reinforcing shared values of resilience, unity, and hope. Attendees were reminded that while the pain of the past remains, Rwanda’s journey of rebuilding and reconciliation continues to inspire the world.

As the event concluded, participants renewed their commitment to keeping the memory of the victims alive and to actively contributing to the fight against genocide ideology wherever it may arise.
