On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, delegations involved in the ongoing CAVB Men’s Club Championship including club officials, coaches, international referees, and team representatives visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi to pay their respects to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The visit formed part of activities surrounding the continental volleyball tournament currently hosted in Kigali. Participants were given a guided tour of the memorial, where they learned about Rwanda’s history before, during, and after the genocide. They were also taken through exhibitions that document the atrocities committed, the resilience of survivors, and the country’s journey toward unity and reconciliation.

During the visit, members of the delegations observed a moment of silence and laid wreaths in honor of the more than one million lives lost during the genocide. Many expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the people of Rwanda, emphasizing the importance of remembrance and the global responsibility to prevent such tragedies from happening again.

Officials from the Confederation of African Volleyball highlighted that the visit was not only symbolic but also educational, aimed at fostering awareness among athletes and sports stakeholders from across Africa. They noted that sports can play a vital role in promoting peace, unity, and shared values beyond competition.

Several players and officials described the experience as emotional and impactful, saying it gave them a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s past and a renewed appreciation for the country’s progress in rebuilding and reconciliation.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial, located in Gisozi, serves as the final resting place for over 250,000 victims and stands as a powerful site of remembrance and education for both Rwandans and international visitors.

The CAVB Men’s Club Championship 2026 continues in Kigali, bringing together top volleyball clubs from across the continent to compete for the prestigious African title, while also offering participants an opportunity to engage with Rwanda’s history and culture.
