President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda has expressed joy after his granddaughter took a major step toward marriage in a traditional ceremony known as “Kuhingira,” a cultural engagement rite common among communities in parts of western Uganda, especially the Bakiga and related groups.

The ceremony, which took place over the weekend, marks the formal introduction and acceptance of a bride into the groom’s family before the official wedding. It is usually filled with cultural rituals, traditional attire, gift exchange, and family blessings.

Museveni’s granddaughter, Sasi Karugire, daughter of Natasha Museveni Karugire and Edwin Karugire, was officially presented in the engagement process during the event. The gathering brought together close family members, relatives, and invited guests who witnessed the union being formally recognized.

The event was characterized by vibrant traditional music, cultural dances, and speeches from elders and family representatives. Gifts such as traditional items and symbolic presents were exchanged between the two families, as part of the cultural requirements that signify agreement and unity.

President Museveni, who attended the ceremony personally, was seen in a celebratory mood as he offered advice and blessings to the couple. He reportedly reflected on the importance of faith and family values, saying that when a person remains committed to God’s work, life tends to align positively, including family matters.

He described the moment as both a personal milestone and a testimony of continuity in family life, emphasizing the importance of respecting cultural traditions while building strong and stable families.

The ceremony is seen as an important step toward the formal wedding, which is expected to take place later after all traditional requirements are fulfilled.
