M23 seizes control of a crucial Masisi area
The Nyabiondo Center in the Masisi Territory in North Kivu Province is now under the authority of the M23 rebel group, which is engaged in combat with the DRC government.
Nyabiondo was captured during fierce combat with the APCLS militia, which is allied with the DRC government forces, according to media reports. On the morning of March 9, 2025, the clashes started.
M23 captured Nyabiondo at approximately 3 p.m. following the combat, according to Kipanda Biiri, a local leader from the Osso-Banyungu Sector, where Nyabiondo is situated, who spoke to Reuters.
Many Nyabiondo locals escaped the violence and took sanctuary in Kashebere and other safer locations in the province's west.
The strategic location of Nyabiondo, near the gateway to the Walikale Territory, has served as a bastion for armed organizations affiliated with the DRC government, such as the NDC-R, which is led by Guidon Shimiray Mwissa.
