Mali Defence Minister Sadio Camara Killed in Major Militant Attack Near Bamako
Mali’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, has reportedly been killed in an attack on his residence near the country’s main military base in Kati, about 15 kilometers north of the capital, Bamako.
According to Reuters, the assault was carried out by an al-Qaeda-linked group, Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, as part of a broader, highly coordinated offensive.
The attack in Kati home to one of Mali’s most strategic army installations was not an isolated incident. Analysts and diplomats say it formed part of one of the largest synchronized assaults in recent years, involving cooperation between jihadist fighters and a Tuareg-dominated rebel group.
Security sources indicate that multiple targets were hit during the operation, underlining the increasing sophistication and reach of armed groups operating across Mali and the wider Sahel region.
If fully confirmed, the killing of Camara would represent a significant blow to Mali’s military leadership and could further destabilize a country already grappling with years of insurgency, political upheaval, and strained security structures.
Mali has long faced attacks from extremist groups affiliated with both al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, despite ongoing military efforts and shifting alliances in the region. The latest incident raises fresh concerns over the ability of state forces to secure key installations and protect senior officials.
Authorities have yet to provide full details on the incident, and investigations are ongoing to establish the full scope of the attack and its consequences.
The situation remains fluid, with more information expected as official confirmations emerge.
