Indian Man Exhumes Sister’s Body in Desperate Attempt to Access Bank Funds
A shocking incident in eastern India has drawn widespread attention after a man reportedly exhumed his deceased sister’s body and brought it to a bank in a desperate effort to prove her death and access money she had left behind.
The incident occurred in Odisha state’s Keonjhar district, where the man, identified as Jitu Munda, had been trying for weeks to withdraw funds from his late sister’s bank account.
According to local reports, his sister had deposited around 19,000 Indian rupees (approximately 296,000 Rwandan francs) from the sale of her livestock before she passed away after a short illness.
With no immediate heirs, the money had effectively been left to Munda. However, when he approached the bank to withdraw the funds, officials reportedly asked him to provide formal documentation confirming her death, along with other required paperwork.
After struggling to obtain the necessary documents for nearly two months, Munda resorted to an extreme and unsettling measure. He went to his sister’s burial site, exhumed her remains, and carried the body to the bank as proof of her death.
Witnesses said the man arrived at the bank carrying the remains, causing shock and confusion among staff and customers. Some reports indicate that he also staged what appeared to be a protest, demanding immediate access to the money.
Bank employees quickly alerted local authorities upon seeing the body. Security officials responded to the scene, after which the remains were taken and reburied according to proper procedures.
Authorities later intervened in the matter, assuring Munda that he would be guided through the legal process to access the funds without further complications.
The incident has sparked debate over bureaucratic procedures and the challenges faced by individuals in accessing financial services, particularly in rural areas where documentation can be difficult to obtain. It also highlights the need for more accessible and compassionate systems when dealing with sensitive cases involving death and inheritance.
