Members of the Senate Committee on Economy and Finance held discussions with the City of Kigali as part of a continued assessment of the implementation of a Senate resolution calling on the Government to accelerate the development of infrastructure in designated industrial zones. The resolution also emphasizes the need to establish a clear management system and a maintenance plan for infrastructure once it is in place.

During the meeting, officials highlighted several challenges hindering the effective implementation of this resolution. These include insufficient infrastructure such as roads, water, and electricity in industrial areas, which limits operational efficiency and investment potential.

Another major concern raised was environmental pollution, particularly untreated waste and wastewater discharged from industries, which continues to negatively impact the environment.

The committee also noted the lack of adequate transport infrastructure to facilitate the movement of workers to and from industrial zones, affecting productivity and accessibility.

In addition, concerns were raised over weak and inconsistent systems for managing and maintaining existing infrastructure within industrial areas, leading to rapid deterioration in some cases.

Lastly, officials pointed out challenges related to the relocation of residents from areas designated for industrial expansion, which has slowed down development projects.

The discussions are part of ongoing efforts to improve industrial development planning and ensure that infrastructure supports sustainable economic growth.
