The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, officially inaugurated the Addis Sports Park, a 5.7-hectare state-of-the-art recreational and sports facility in Addis Ababa, on April 4, 2026.

The park features Olympic-standard swimming pools, professional football, basketball, and tennis courts, an 800-meter running track, and pedestrian-friendly walkways that allow residents to exercise safely without traffic interference.

In a unique tribute to national pride, 15 Ethiopian Olympic gold medalists were honored with dedicated statues at the heart of the park to inspire future generations.

This world-class facility also includes 105 commercial shops for community empowerment, a grand plaza for 3,000 people, and two-level basement parking for 300 vehicles, seamlessly connecting with riverside green projects.

Officials highlighted that the park’s design draws direct inspiration from Rwanda’s urban innovation, particularly the fitness-friendly corridors and car-free public spaces in Kigali, which Abiy Ahmed visited in April 2024.

These features demonstrate how cross-African urban lessons can translate into practical, community-centered development.

PM Abiy emphasized that true development is community-focused. “We don’t just envision a better future, we build it,” he said, underlining Ethiopia’s commitment to combining sport, commerce, sustainability, and public wellbeing in its urban renewal efforts.
