Yolande Makolo, spokesperson of the Rwanda government, has congratulated the national team of the Democratic Republic of the Congo following their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking their first appearance in 52 years.

In a message shared on X, Makolo described football as a powerful unifying force, noting that a team brings together players from different provinces, languages, and backgrounds under one flag, inspiring an entire nation to dream together.

She emphasized that such a spirit of unity is invaluable and should never be turned into division or hate, while extending her best wishes to the Congolese side, popularly known as the Leopards.

The DR Congo national team last featured at the World Cup in 1974, when the country was known as Zaire. Their return to the global stage was secured after a 1-0 victory over Jamaica in an intercontinental playoff held in Mexico early Wednesday.
