Leaders and Cyclists Honor Genocide Victims at Kamembe Memorial During Race to Remember Event
On Sunday, 26 April 2026 leaders from Rusizi District, officials from the Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY), cycling teams, athletes, and other participants in the Race to Remember gathered at the Kamembe Genocide Memorial to pay tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi laid to rest at the site.
The visit formed part of the broader activities surrounding the Race to Remember, a cycling initiative organized to commemorate the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi while promoting unity, resilience, and remembrance. Participants paused from their sporting engagements to honor the lives lost, laying wreaths and observing a moment of silence in a deeply moving ceremony.
Leaders from Rusizi District emphasized the importance of preserving the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi and ensuring that future generations understand its devastating impact. They called on young people, including athletes, to take an active role in promoting unity, fighting genocide ideology, and contributing to the country’s continued development.
Officials from FERWACY noted that the Race to Remember goes beyond competition, serving as a powerful platform to educate both local and international participants about Rwanda’s past and its remarkable journey toward reconciliation and recovery. They highlighted the significance of combining sports with remembrance as a way to spread messages of peace and solidarity.
Cyclists and team members from various countries expressed their solidarity with Rwandans during the commemoration. Many described the experience as emotional and enlightening, noting that visiting the memorial helped them better understand the country’s history and the importance of remembrance.
The Kamembe Genocide Memorial stands as a place of reflection and remembrance, honoring the victims and reminding visitors of the need to prevent such atrocities from ever happening again. Events like the Race to Remember continue to play a vital role in keeping the memory alive while fostering unity among people from different backgrounds.
As Rwanda continues its journey of rebuilding and strengthening national unity, initiatives that combine sports and remembrance remain essential in promoting peace, understanding, and collective responsibility among citizens and the international community.
