UNHCR Chief Filippo Grandi Visits Nkamira Refugee Camp
On the morning of Friday, August 29, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi visited the Nkamira Transit Refugee Camp in Rubavu District, which hosts 3,196 Congolese refugees who fled insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at different times.
During his working visit to Rwanda, Grandi held discussions with President Paul Kagame, highlighting UNHCR’s role in finding solutions for refugees from the DRC, particularly in promoting lasting peace and providing sustainable support for those displaced.
After meeting with the President, Grandi emphasized that the discussions focused on Rwanda’s policies that leave no refugee behind while preparing them for the future. The talks also revisited the Washington Peace Agreement, which aims to address insecurity in the Great Lakes region a conflict that has caused over 130,000 Congolese refugees to be hosted in Rwanda.
He stated: “Resolving the situation of DRC refugees in Rwanda is one of the objectives outlined in the Washington Agreement. UNHCR is ready to contribute to facilitating the return of refugees and ensuring durable solutions.”
Since August 27, Grandi has been on an official working visit to Rwanda, meeting other officials, including Minister of Emergency Management Maj. Gen (Rtd) Albert Murasira and Director General of the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) ACP Lynder Nkuranga, among others, to discuss the development of refugee support programs.
