Rwanda Deploys New Contingent of Army and Police Officers to Cabo Delgado
The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and Rwanda National Police (RNP) have flagged off a new joint contingent of troops set to deploy to Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado, where they will take over peace support operations from compatriots who have served in the region for the past year.
The send-off ceremony took place on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Rwanda Military Academy in Gako, Bugesera District. It was presided over by Major General Vincent Nyakarundi, the Army Chief of Staff of the RDF, and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Operations, Vincent B. Sano.
The newly formed contingent, commanded by Major General Vincent Gatama, will continue Rwanda’s mission in Cabo Delgado, where Rwandan security forces have been instrumental in supporting Mozambique to combat insurgency and stabilize security institutions.
Maj Gen Nyakarundi conveyed a special message from His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda and Commander-in-Chief of RDF, reminding the troops of the values of discipline, dedication, and professionalism that have defined Rwanda’s security forces during the past four years of operations in Mozambique.
He praised the achievements of the outgoing contingent and urged the new team to sustain Rwanda’s legacy of excellence.
“The strength of our mission lies in discipline, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to our duty,” Maj Gen Nyakarundi emphasized.
In his address, DIGP Sano encouraged the contingent to safeguard Rwanda’s reputation by avoiding misconduct and working in close coordination with Mozambican authorities and communities.
This deployment underscores the strong bilateral ties between Rwanda and Mozambique, as well as Rwanda’s commitment to contributing to regional peace and security.
