Israel: Netanyahu Blocked from Dismissing Prosecutor Who’s Been Tough on Him
The Supreme Court in Israel has blocked a recent decision by the country’s government to dismiss Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, who gained prominence for prosecuting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on corruption charges.
On Monday, August 4, 2025, the Israeli government had decided to remove Gali Baharav-Miara from her position. However, as soon as the Supreme Court was informed, it intervened and prevented the decision from being implemented.
Prime Minister Netanyahu and his close allies accuse Baharav-Miara of overstepping her role and obstructing government decisions. One of the key decisions she opposed was the dismissal of the head of Israel’s internal security agency.
Reliable sources indicate that Netanyahu is seeking to oust Baharav-Miara primarily because she is the lead prosecutor in the ongoing corruption cases against him.
This would have been the first time in Israel’s history that a sitting government dismissed the Attorney General.
The Supreme Court has ordered that the government must not appoint a new Attorney General or interfere with Baharav-Miara's work.
