New York: Five Killed in Midtown Office Building Shooting, Gunman Takes Own Life
Authorities in New York City are investigating a shooting incident that claimed five lives on Monday evening, July 28, 2025, inside a commercial building in Midtown Manhattan.
According to police, the gunman was Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, Nevada. Tamura entered the building at 345 Park Avenue shortly after 6:00 PM, armed with an M4-style rifle. He opened fire in the building’s lobby, killing several individuals, including a retired NYPD officer, before proceeding to the 33rd floor, where he reportedly shot one more person and then took his own life.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Tamura acted alone. Surveillance footage shows him entering the building calmly, carrying the weapon. He fired multiple rounds in the ground floor area, then moved upstairs before dying by suicide.
His body and the firearm were recovered at the scene. Authorities have not identified any connection between Tamura and the building’s occupants, and there is no evidence so far that the shooting was ideologically or politically motivated.
Victims identified
Among the five people killed was Didarul Islam, a former NYPD officer who had transitioned to private security and was working in the building at the time. He is survived by his pregnant wife and two children.
The other victims were civilian staff working in the building. Their names have not yet been released publicly to allow their families time to be notified.
Four other individuals were injured in the incident, including one in serious condition. Others sustained minor injuries while trying to flee.
Preliminary findings show that Tamura legally owned the weapon, having obtained a firearms license in Nevada in 2022. Police confirmed he had no prior criminal record.
He reportedly traveled from Las Vegas to New York by car in the days leading up to the shooting, passing through several states, including Colorado and New Jersey.
Investigators are now reviewing Tamura’s mental health history and any personal circumstances that could help explain his actions.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed sorrow over the tragedy and called for renewed national conversation on gun safety:
“This is not just a New York problem it’s a national challenge. We must continue working together to protect lives and ensure these weapons do not end up in the wrong hands,” he said.
In the first half of 2025, the United States recorded over 200 mass shooting incidents, resulting in nearly 200 fatalities and more than 880 injuries.
This event adds to ongoing concerns over gun violence in major U.S. cities and has once again sparked debate about gun control policies and mental health services.
