Retiring soldiers were honoured for their vital contribution to Rwanda’s liberation and reconstruction, pledging continued service to the country even beyond the uniform.

On July 28, 2025, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) held an official farewell ceremony for military personnel retiring from active service, along with those whose contractual terms had come to an end. The event took place at RDF Headquarters in Kimihurura and simultaneously at various military divisions across the country.

This was the 13th edition of such a ceremony, aimed at giving a dignified send-off to soldiers who have completed their service, in recognition of their dedication, courage, and unmatched contribution to protecting and rebuilding the nation after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Defence Minister Juvénal Marizamunda commended the retiring officers for their instrumental role in Rwanda’s history and ongoing development.

“You sacrificed everything during the liberation struggle, helped stop the Genocide against the Tutsi, and played a vital role in rebuilding our country. You helped shape the RDF into a strong, professional force that is respected both within Rwanda and internationally.”

He emphasized that their knowledge and experience remain valuable assets for the country, even after their retirement from active military roles.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Mubarakh Muganga, also expressed gratitude for their service and called on them to continue upholding the values of the RDF.

“Today is a day of honour for soldiers who served selflessly. While you may be leaving your formal roles in the military, you have not left behind the values that define RDF. These values will continue to guide you and keep you ready to serve your country whenever needed.”

Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Maj Gen (Rtd) Wilson Gumisiriza reaffirmed their continued commitment to the nation.

“Although we are stepping down from our daily responsibilities, we will continue to serve the country in other ways. We may remove the uniform, but our duty to Rwanda remains.”

As a token of appreciation, the retirees were awarded certificates of honour, symbolizing the deep respect and gratitude the country holds for their dedicated service and sacrifice.

The group included retired generals, senior officers, and junior soldiers of various ranks  all recognized as key contributors to the stability and progress Rwanda enjoys today. Despite stepping out of uniform, they affirmed their continued role as pillars of patriotism and national service.
