Senegalese President Praises Rwanda’s Efforts in Tourism and Sports Development
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is on a three-day official visit to Rwanda and visited Kigali Golf Club, where he met with Rwanda Development Board CEO Jean Guy Afrika and other senior officials to discuss how sports and tourism can drive economic growth and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The forum provided a platform to share lessons from Rwanda’s success, explore investment opportunities, and exchange best practices for hosting international events.
During the forum, RDB CEO Jean Guy Afrika highlighted Rwanda’s progress in tourism and investment, noting that international arrivals rose from 497,000 in 2015 to 1.36 million in 2024, generating $647 million in revenue.
Hotel capacity increased from 8,600 to 21,102 rooms, while new investments reached $3 billion last year. Afrika added that initiatives such as the Visit Rwanda campaign aim to grow tourism revenue to $1.1 billion by 2029.
President Faye praised Rwanda’s coordinated approach, saying, “It is clear that behind Rwanda’s success there is careful planning, a clear purpose, and consistent execution. This is the secret to your achievements.” He added, “Rwanda has become a valuable source of lessons. Its ability to welcome international competitions demonstrates strong leadership and a vision that others can emulate.”
He also emphasized the importance of African collaboration: “Partnerships between African nations are essential, especially when organizing international events on our continent. Rwanda is showing that excellence in preparation and management can lead to remarkable outcomes for the entire region.”
Reflecting on Rwanda’s experience in hosting major sporting events, President Faye remarked, “I am impressed by how Rwanda has positioned itself as a hub for sports and tourism in Africa. Its example should inspire other countries to invest in similar strategies.”
He further noted, “Your country’s coordinated efforts, combining governance, security, and inclusive development, are a model. I am confident that Rwanda will continue to inspire pride and bring joy to Africa through its achievements.”
The forum concluded by acknowledging the key Rwandan officials who have driven these successes: RDB CEO Jean Guy Afrika, Minister of Foreign Affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe, Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire, and Minister of Environment Arakwiye. President Faye’s visit highlighted the value of collaboration, strategic planning, and knowledge-sharing between African nations to advance sports, tourism, and sustainable development.
