On October 3, 2025 – President Paul Kagame, Commander-in-Chief of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), presided over the commissioning ceremony of 987 officer cadets who were conferred the rank of Second Lieutenant at the Rwanda Military Academy in Gako, Bugesera District.

The event was attended by representatives of military academies from partner countries including Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Guinea, and Zambia. Among the commissioned officers, 117 are women, reflecting the increasing role of women in Rwanda’s armed forces, while 42 studied in allied countries. A total of 36 cadets did not complete the program due to various reasons, including health, discipline, and academic challenges.

In his address, President Kagame urged the new officers to embrace discipline, patriotism, and a forward-looking mindset as they begin their service:

“You must take the lead in keeping up with the times, lest the time leave you behind. Learn to match the pace of the country’s development.”

He emphasized that their primary duty is to serve the Rwandan people:

“Your responsibility as officers is to protect Rwanda and its citizens. Always remember that serving Rwandans is your foremost duty.”

President Kagame also expressed gratitude to the trainers who prepared the cadets and to the parents who supported their decision to join the profession of honor.

He further acknowledged the contribution of friendly nations that partnered with Rwanda in training the new officers:

“We thank our partner countries for the training and education provided. Such cooperation not only helps build a strong army but also reflects the friendship that enables nations to move forward together.”

The ceremony carried a special family moment, as President Kagame and the First Lady Jeannette Kagame also witnessed their son, Brian Kagame, join the ranks alongside 986 other new officers.

President Kagame concluded by reminding the new officers of the responsibility that now lies ahead:

“Your role as officers begins now. It demands much from you: dedication, discipline, good judgment, and a strong mindset. It requires selfless service so that you, your families, your comrades, and the entire nation can thrive.”
