Russian drone strikes hit two passenger trains in northern Ukraine’s Sumy region on Saturday, killing at least one person and injuring dozens more, according to Ukrainian officials.

The attacks occurred near the town of Shostka, close to the Russian border. Officials said the first drone struck a train carrying dozens of civilians, prompting rescuers and railway workers to rush to the scene to evacuate the wounded.

Moments later, a second drone slammed into another nearby train in what Ukrainian authorities described as a deliberate “double tap” strike targeting both passengers and emergency crews.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said at least one railway worker was killed and more than 30 people injured, including several in critical condition. “Russia continues to terrorize civilians and infrastructure with drone attacks,” Klymenko wrote on Telegram.

Footage shared by Ukrainian media showed shattered train carriages, blown-out windows, and rescue teams pulling passengers from twisted metal under heavy rain.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as “yet another act of barbarism” against civilians. He reiterated calls for stronger air defenses and urged international partners to accelerate weapons deliveries.

The Sumy region, which borders Russia, has faced regular cross-border shelling and drone attacks since the start of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
