Rwanda is set to deploy a new contingent of 160 police officers to Juba, South Sudan, where they will take over duties under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), replacing colleagues who have completed their one-year tour.

The incoming unit, identified as RWAFPU3-8 and commanded by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dativa Iribagiza, received a pre-deployment briefing on Tuesday from the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Vincent Sano.

The officers will assume responsibilities previously handled by RWAFPU3-7, whose mandate included protecting internally displaced civilians, United Nations personnel, and staff from other international organizations operating in the country.

During the briefing, DIGP Sano urged the contingent to apply the skills and training they received, emphasizing professionalism, teamwork, and strict adherence to instructions from their commanders. He stressed that the mission represents Rwanda as a nation rather than individuals, and encouraged discipline, mutual respect, and proper management of equipment.

He also cautioned them against wasting time on non-essential activities, including excessive use of social media, reminding them that their conduct abroad reflects on both Rwanda and its police force.

The RWAFPU3-8 contingent includes 84 women and 76 men and is scheduled to depart Kigali later this week for South Sudan’s capital, Juba.
