Rwanda Welcomes Over 220 Returnees Previously Held by FDLR in DRC
Eric Rwanda has received 222 of its citizens who were previously held hostage by the FDLR rebel group operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The returnees, mostly women and children, crossed into Rwanda through the La Corniche border, which connects the two countries. Upon arrival on 6 November 2025, vehicles were waiting to transport them to the Nyarushishi Transit Center in Rusizi District, where they will stay temporarily.
These Rwandans had been living in a temporary camp in Goma after being forcibly taken from various parts of eastern DRC by the FDLR.
Mulindwa Prosper, Mayor of Rubavu District, welcomed the returnees, assuring them of the country’s care and support. He emphasized that Rwanda acts as a nurturing parent even for those who may not have a biological family.
The returnees’ identification documents are processed, the Rwandan government will provide them with assistance to reintegrate into normal life.
This support includes initial financial aid $188 (about 272,000 Rwf) for those over 18, $113 (about 192,000 Rwf) for minors and basic food supplies valued at 45,000 Rwf per person.
This group follows another 326 Rwandans previously rescued from the FDLR, contributing to the thousands of returnees welcomed into Rwanda since January 2025.
The new arrivals, primarily women and children, were received at La Corniche border in Rubavu District and transported to the Nyarushishi Transit Center for temporary accommodation.
