First Lady Jeannette Kagame has called on Rwandan youth to take seriously the responsibility of nurturing and protecting families, emphasizing that strong homes are the foundation of a healthy society and nation.

Speaking at the Young Leaders Prayer Breakfast in Kigali, Mrs. Jannette Kagame warned that rising selfishness, greed, and moral decay are threatening family values. She highlighted that young people, as future leaders, have a vital role in safeguarding the family unit, which she described as “a small Rwanda and a small heaven.”

The First Lady expressed concern about societal trends that undermine commitment, selflessness, and trust within families.

“We cannot fail to be concerned by these times, where the world has embraced self-centeredness and selfishness at a new level, where family interests no longer matter, and where people have become indifferent, greedy, inhumane and morally corrupt, causing family values, marital trust and selfless sacrifice to lose meaning,” she said.

She stressed that every individual’s responsibility begins at home and that prioritizing weddings over preparing for marriage often weakens families.

“Many homes collapse because people put more energy into preparing the wedding instead of the marriage. Couples should ask themselves: Are we marrying for love, or due to family or peer pressure? Is it because of pregnancy, or wealth expectations? It is important to reflect on the real reasons for building a family,” she emphasized.

Mrs. Jannette Kagame also highlighted the broader role of the youth in shaping society, reminding them that leadership begins at home and that families are the core of national progress.

“Parents and the youth, the family is a small Rwanda and a small heaven. Our country has trusted you with the responsibility to build a good legacy for future generations. Let this moment be one of making firm commitments to serve as role models to the flock entrusted to you,” she added.

The First Lady concluded by urging young Rwandans to take active steps to build strong, value-driven families, reinforcing that the health of the nation starts with responsible, committed homes.
