The National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) announced on Wednesday, 17 September 2025, that Rwanda’s economy expanded by 7.8 percent in the second quarter of 2025, reaching FRW 5,798 billion at current market prices, up from FRW 4,966 billion in Q2 2024.

Agriculture contributed 23 percent to GDP, services 50 percent, and industry 21 percent, with net direct taxes accounting for 5 percent of total GDP. Within agriculture, production of export crops surged 42 percent, while food crops grew just 3 percent.

NISR Director General Ivan Murenzi explained the growth in agriculture:

“Most of the increase in agriculture’s contribution to GDP comes from export-oriented crops, which rose by 42 percent this quarter. If you look closely, coffee played a particularly significant role, while food crops grew only 3 percent due to their relatively low output.”

Industry grew by 7 percent, with mining and quarrying up 12 percent, construction 5 percent, and manufacturing 8 percent. Manufacturing growth was driven by food processing (10 percent), metal products and machinery (19 percent), chemicals, rubber, and plastics (24 percent), and non-metallic minerals like cement (23 percent). Textiles and leather declined 9 percent, while beverages and tobacco fell 4 percent.

Services expanded 9 percent, contributing 4.3 percentage points to overall GDP growth. Key drivers included wholesale and retail trade (13 percent), land transport (10 percent), financial services (8 percent), information and communication (11 percent), public administration (16 percent), health services (10 percent), and education (5 percent). Hotels and restaurants, however, declined 7 percent.

Analysts note that Rwanda’s economy continues to demonstrate resilience, supported by strong performance in export-oriented agriculture, trade, and public services.
