This afternoon at Urugwiro Village, President Paul Kagame received Dani Dayan, Chairperson of Yad Vashem.

Hon. Dayan is in Kigali to participate in the national #Kwibuka32 remembrance ceremony and the International Conference on Genocide Prevention. Their discussions focused on the power of commemoration in rebuilding and unifying nations after genocide, and its critical role in combating genocide denial.

Dayan was among international leaders attending the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, as well as the high-level conference held at the Intare Conference Arena.

Speaking at the conference, Dayan emphasized that remembrance must be accompanied by responsibility and action: “Remembrance must go hand in hand with the responsibility to defend life, fight hatred, and act before it is too late. Prevention requires constant effort, education, and the courage of leaders to act before hate turns into violence.”

He also stressed the importance of preserving survivor testimonies, drawing lessons from the Holocaust. “We are losing survivors who can directly tell their stories. Preserving testimony is essential so that future generations can learn and resist denial.”

Earlier, Dayan paid tribute to victims at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where more than 250,000 victims are laid to rest, emphasizing that remembrance must go beyond memorials to include documented testimonies.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment between Rwanda and global institutions to preserve truth, strengthen remembrance, and ensure that genocide never happens again.
