Yoweri Museveni drops 29 ministers in major cabinet reshuffle
On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, President Yoweri Museveni unveiled a new Cabinet aimed at helping him implement government priorities, with major changes affecting several senior ministers who have served for many years.
In the reshuffle, 29 ministers were dropped from the new government lineup, signaling one of the biggest changes in Uganda’s leadership structure in recent years.
Among the key changes, former Finance and Planning Minister Matia Kasaija was replaced by Henry Musasizi. Kasaija had served in the ministry for years and was considered one of the longest-serving figures in Museveni’s administration.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, retired General Jeje Odongo was replaced by Ambassador Dr. Adonia Ayebare, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development also saw changes, with Betty Amongi leaving her position and being replaced by Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde Kakurugu.
Meanwhile, Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, who had long served as Uganda’s Second Deputy Prime Minister, was replaced by Dr. Crispus Walter Kiyonga.
The reshuffle is seen as part of Museveni’s broader strategy to reorganize and strengthen his administration ahead of the next phase of governance in Uganda.
