Minister Dr. Bizimana urges prisoners to transform and rejoin the Rwandan community
Today, at the Nyamasheke Rehabilitation Centre, the sixth phase of training sessions promoting Unity and Reconciliation among Rwandans concluded.
The program targeted prisoners convicted of crimes related to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi who are preparing to complete their sentences.
Prisoners attended the event with their families, including children and spouses.
The guest of honor was Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE) Dr. Damascene Ndahiro, who addressed the prisoners, reminding them of the role of the former genocidal regime in fostering divisions, as well as their own responsibility in the choices that led to the genocide. He encouraged them to genuinely transform.
The event was organized by MINUBUMWE in partnership with Rwanda Correctional Service and other diverse partners.
Minister Bizimana also highlighted the role of the Government of National Unity in granting forgiveness to genocide perpetrators, establishing restorative justice through the Gacaca courts, and implementing other programs that foster reconciliation, such as the Ndi Umunyarwanda initiative.
These programs aim to give youth equal opportunities and to build responsible Rwandans committed to both personal and national development.
Prisoners expressed gratitude to the Government of Rwanda for restorative justice initiatives that allow them to reintegrate into the Rwandan community. They pledged to change, live peacefully with others, contribute to nation-building, and uphold Unity and Reconciliation among Rwandans.
