Rwandan security forces deployed in Mozambique joined their Mozambican counterparts, government officials, and representatives of TotalEnergies to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The commemoration, held in Mocímboa da Praia District, brought together key leaders including Mozambique’s Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Tomás Mponha, representatives from TotalEnergies, and local religious leaders.

In his address, the Head of the Rwandan Security Forces contingent, Brig Gen Mujuni, underscored the importance of remembrance as a responsibility to prevent future atrocities.

He highlighted that the genocide was fueled by divisionism rooted in colonial legacies, poor governance, and discriminatory politics, which led to the killing of over one million Tutsi in just 100 days while the international community stood by.

He further noted that the intervention of the Rwandan Patriotic Army was crucial in stopping the genocide and saving lives, reaffirming Rwanda’s continued commitment to unity, peace, and ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again.

Speaking on behalf of Mozambique’s leadership, Brig Gen Tomás Mponha emphasized that Rwanda’s history offers important lessons not only for Mozambique but for the entire world. He commended the courage of those who stopped the genocide and praised the ongoing role of Rwandan forces in combating terrorism in Cabo Delgado Province.

The event concluded with participants reflecting on messages of remembrance, unity, and collective responsibility for peace, including a message delivered by President Paul Kagame, reaffirming the importance of solidarity in preventing genocide and safeguarding global stability.
