Twenty Migrants Die in Boat Accident off Italy
Twenty migrants and refugees from Libya lost their lives in a boat accident near the island of Lampedusa in southern Italy, while more than fifteen others remain missing.
The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and other humanitarian organizations confirmed that 60 people were rescued, including 56 men and 4 women, and 20 bodies were recovered from the sea.
According to Al Jazeera, human rights organizations and the United Nations have raised concerns about ongoing violence, forced detention, and torture targeting refugees and migrants in Libya, particularly those attempting to reach Europe via irregular routes. In February, authorities discovered nearly 50 bodies in mass graves, highlighting the severe risks faced by individuals trying to cross Libya on their way to Europe.
Filippo Ungaro, UNHCR spokesperson in Italy, reported that 675 people have died in the central Mediterranean this year alone while attempting to reach European countries.
Aid organizations warn that migrants face extreme dangers during their journey, including exposure to violence at border points in Libya, harsh conditions at sea, and lack of basic necessities.
The UN and European Union have called for structured measures to protect refugees and reduce the perilous journeys across the Mediterranean.
Humanitarian reports continue to document the vulnerabilities faced by migrants, who are at constant risk of abuse, deprivation, and life-threatening conditions both on land and at sea.
