More than 300 Rwandan nationals who recently repatriated from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have begun a unity and resilience orientation program at the Nyarushishi Transit Center in Rusizi District.

The sessions, jointly organized by the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) and the Unity Club Intwararumuri, are designed to help returnees understand Rwanda’s journey of unity, reconciliation, and recovery following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Participants are being guided through Rwanda’s history of national cohesion before colonial rule, the origins of divisionist ideologies, and the impact of the genocide. The program also highlights the country’s progress in rebuilding unity, shared values, and a strong national identity.

Since January 2025, Rwanda has welcomed back more than 5,100 citizens from the DRC. Many returnees say they had been misled with false information suggesting that coming back to Rwanda would expose them to harm claims that have proven unfounded.

On November 6, 2025, for instance, 69 families a total of 223 individuals (12 men, 58 women, and 153 children) were received at the La Corniche border post connecting Rwanda and the DRC.

Upon arrival, returnees are temporarily accommodated at the Nyarushishi Transit Center, where they receive essential assistance. Each adult is provided with 270,000 Rwandan francs, while minors receive 182,000 francs, along with basic food supplies valued at 45,000 francs per person to help them restart their lives.

Officials emphasize that such initiatives reflect Rwanda’s continued commitment to ensuring that every citizen no matter where they have lived can return home safely, rebuild with dignity, and contribute to a united and resilient nation.
