President Kagame Receives Inter-Parliamentary Union Secretary General
October 13, 2025 — President Paul Kagame on Monday received Martin Chungong, the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), who is in Rwanda for a three-day working visit aimed at strengthening collaboration between Rwanda and the global parliamentary body.
Discussions between President Kagame and Mr. Chungong focused on the role of parliaments in promoting good governance, democracy, gender equality, and inclusive participation of youth and women in decision-making processes.
Mr. Chungong commended Rwanda’s progress in building strong governance institutions and advancing gender equality, describing the country as a model for many others due to its dedicated and inclusive parliament.
His visit builds on the long-standing partnership between the IPU and the Parliament of Rwanda, which includes initiatives to enhance parliamentary capacity, promote gender equality, and support good governance programs.
During his stay, Mr. Chungong is expected to meet with leaders of both chambers of Parliament and visit development projects supported by parliamentary cooperation initiatives.
Founded in 1889, the Inter-Parliamentary Union works to promote peace, democracy, and cooperation among national parliaments across the world.
Mr. Chungong’s visit highlights the growing trust and partnership between Rwanda and international institutions that champion sustainable development and democratic governance.
