The Kololo Independence Grounds turned into a hive of political activity today as thousands of delegates gathered for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Delegates Conference, a landmark event concluding elections of the party’s governing organs and setting the agenda for Uganda’s next political season.

NRM National Chairman, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, officially opened the conference with a major policy address outlining Uganda’s economic journey and the country’s aspirations for the coming decades. Museveni highlighted Uganda’s progress from an economy worth just $3.9 billion in 1986 to $66 billion today, reaffirming his vision of steering the nation toward a projected $500 billion high middle-income economy.

The President emphasized the importance of accountability and service delivery as central pillars in protecting national achievements. He urged leaders to intensify the fight against corruption at the local government level, eliminate bribery in recruitment processes, stop the theft of medicines from health facilities, and end illegal charges in government schools. “We must safeguard the gains we have made in peace, security, and economic progress as we prepare for the next leap,” he said.

The conference is also concluding elections for leadership positions in the party’s Special Organs, including the Women’s League, Youth League, and Entrepreneurs League. The most closely watched contest is for First National Vice Chairperson (Female), where former Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga faces off against the current Speaker, Rt. Hon. Anita Among.

The outcome of this high-profile race is expected to influence the party’s future leadership dynamics. Delegates will also witness the unveiling of newly elected structures tasked with spearheading grassroots mobilization, fostering party cohesion, and ensuring delivery on the NRM’s electoral promises over the next five years.

NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, is presenting a comprehensive report to the delegates, reviewing the party’s achievements, challenges, and priorities moving forward. He has consistently appealed for unity, urging members to place the party’s mission above personal ambition.

This year’s conference is being held under the theme “Protecting the Gains: As We Make a Leap into High Middle-Income Status.” Organizers describe the overwhelming turnout as a testament to the NRM’s strong grassroots support and members’ confidence in the party’s electoral agenda. With delegates drawn from across Uganda, the Kololo gathering marks a significant moment in shaping the ruling party’s direction and the broader political trajectory of the country.
