A team of military engineering specialists from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), currently deployed in Jamaica, partnered with engineers from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) to carry out a community service initiative at Blessed Assurance Children’s Home, a center that cares for children with disabilities.

The activity took place on March 1, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate facilities damaged by a recent storm identified as Melissa. The initiative aims to support affected residents and restore essential infrastructure in impacted communities.

Conducted in collaboration with the Tony Thwaites Wing of the University of the West Indies Hospital, the exercise focused on improving living and learning conditions for children at the center. Tasks completed included repainting classroom buildings and installing ventilation equipment in dormitories.

The joint effort highlights growing cooperation between RDF and JDF, reflecting their shared commitment to strengthening community resilience and providing humanitarian assistance where needed.

The head of the RDF engineering contingent, Col. Moses Kayigamba, thanked all participants for their dedication and teamwork. He also explained the origins of Umuganda, describing it as a Rwandan homegrown initiative designed to promote unity, collective responsibility, and community-driven solutions.

He noted that in Rwanda the activity is traditionally carried out on the last Saturday of every month, and introducing it abroad helps share values of solidarity while strengthening bilateral relations.

Dalmas Agan, director of Blessed Assurance Children’s Home, expressed heartfelt appreciation to both military teams for what he described as exceptional support. He said the improvements will significantly enhance the children’s daily lives and learning environment.

He added that the initiative stands as a powerful symbol of compassion and partnership, noting that it has already made a visible difference in the wellbeing of the children cared for at the facility.
