Mozambique’s President Calls for Direct Kigali–Maputo Flights
Mozambique’s President, Daniel Francisco Chapo, has called for the establishment of direct flights between Kigali and Maputo to unlock trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.
He made the remarks during the Business Leaders Roundtable hosted by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at the Kigali Convention Centre. The session brought together Rwandan and Mozambican private sector leaders to explore avenues for deeper cooperation.
President Chapo noted that limited air connectivity within Africa continues to slow intra-continental trade. He pointed out that his journey to Rwanda required transiting either through Addis Ababa or Johannesburg before arriving in Kigali.
“Yesterday, I discussed with President Kagame the need for a direct Kigali–Maputo route. This would significantly ease business travel and speed up collaboration between our countries,” he said.
He further emphasized Mozambique’s readiness to partner with Rwanda in technology innovation and urban development, citing the potential to supply electricity and other essential resources to support growth.
The Mozambican leader also praised Rwanda’s role in restoring peace and security in Cabo Delgado Province, describing it as a strong example of brotherhood and solidarity.
Highlighting Mozambique’s vast opportunities in agriculture, fisheries, livestock, mining, tourism, and trade, President Chapo encouraged Rwandan investors to seize the moment and explore the market.
On the final day of his state visit, President Chapo toured the Kigali Special Economic Zone in Masoro, Gasabo District, where he visited Pink Mango, a garment manufacturing company, and Gasabo Gold Refinery.
