Rwanda Rejects ICGLR Resolutions on Eastern DRC Conflict, Calls Them “Null and Void”
Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olivier Nduhungirehe, has dismissed the resolutions adopted at last week’s International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) summit in Kinshasa, declaring them “null and void” with regard to issues concerning the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The summit, which elected DRC President Félix Tshisekedi as the new chair of the regional body, issued a set of resolutions aimed at addressing the security situation in eastern Congo. Rwanda, however, did not participate in the meeting an absence that Kigali says undermines the legitimacy of the decisions taken.
In a statement posted on social media, Minister Nduhungirehe argued that the ICGLR cannot make binding decisions on matters directly involving Rwanda without its presence at the negotiating table. He said resolutions taken “in Rwanda’s absence carry no legitimacy,” and therefore cannot be considered valid for any political or security processes affecting the region.
The foreign minister emphasized that the only viable and credible paths toward resolving the crisis are the Washington and Doha peace processes, both of which are supported by the African Union.
These frameworks, he said, provide internationally recognized platforms for negotiations and remain the most effective avenues for pursuing a durable solution to the decades-long conflict in eastern DRC.Rwanda’s strong rejection of the ICGLR resolutions marks the latest diplomatic friction in regional efforts to stabilize eastern Congo.
