Prime Minister Nsengiyumva urges Nyaruguru residents to boost agricultural output

Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva has encouraged farmers in Nyaruguru District to maximize productivity and embrace modern farming practices, stressing that their progress is a source of pride for President Paul Kagame.


He delivered the message on Monday, September 22, 2025, while launching the 2026A planting season in Urwonjya marshland, Nyagisozi sector, at the start of his two-day tour of the Southern Province.

The Premier pointed out that Rwanda’s current maize yield of about five tons per hectare could be doubled if farmers use improved seeds, apply both organic and inorganic fertilizers, and adopt irrigation.

“Every piece of land suitable for farming, whether marshland or hillside, must be put to use,” he emphasized.

Dr. Nsengiyumva also tasked government institutions responsible for agriculture to work hand in hand with cooperatives and individual farmers to drive the country’s ambition of doubling agricultural output and lifting communities out of poverty.

“When you thrive, the President is happy, and you should strive to keep him proud,” he told residents.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister visited Mata Tea Company in Mata sector, where he assessed progress in tea production and value addition key components of Rwanda’s strategy to expand export volumes.
