President Kagame: Africa Has the Capacity to Achieve Food Security
President Paul Kagame has emphasized that Africa possesses all the resources and knowledge needed to achieve food self-sufficiency, stressing the importance of changing mindsets and working together to reach this goal.
He made the remarks in Dakar, Senegal, on September 1, 2025, during the Africa Food Systems Forum 2025. President Kagame joined his Senegalese counterpart, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, along with leaders of youth-led institutions driving agricultural transformation across the continent.
President Kagame pointed out that the Special Climate-Friendly Investment Fund, established in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), has helped Rwanda advance climate-smart and technology-driven agriculture.
He further highlighted the contribution of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), noting its role in Rwanda’s transition from traditional subsistence farming to modern, market-oriented agriculture capable of producing surpluses.
While acknowledging the progress achieved, President Kagame cautioned that more effort is still needed to realize Rwanda’s ambition of full food security. He outlined key strategies, including transforming farmers’ mindsets, promoting innovation and technology, and strengthening collaboration with partners particularly the private sector.
The Dakar forum placed special focus on how African youth can be empowered to lead the continent’s agricultural transformation, ensuring a sustainable and food-secure future for all.
