Ghana: President John Mahama Removes Chief Justice from Office
Ghanaian President John Mahama has dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, citing misuse of public funds and abuse of authority.
The decision came after a detailed investigation found that Torkornoo used state resources for personal purposes and unlawfully transferred staff.
Torkornoo had been temporarily suspended in April following three formal complaints against her. The inquiry reviewed over 10,000 documents and statements from 13 witnesses, including judicial officials and experts, which confirmed the allegations.
Reports also indicate that Torkornoo’s husband and daughter used state funds for trips to Tanzania and the United States in 2023.
Torkornoo was the third woman in Ghana’s history to serve as Chief Justice, assuming office in 2023 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo. Opposition parties criticized her removal, claiming it is politically motivated and threatens judicial independence.
