The trial of Ingabire Victoire Postponed
Kigali; July 8, 2025, opposition politician Ingabire Victoire appeared in court at the Kicukiro Primary Court, where she was represented by Me Gatera Gashabana.
Ingabire Victoire stated that there were audio recordings in the system that she had not been able to hear. These recordings had been extracted from her phone by investigators. She added that her lawyer is only allowed 30 minutes during visits to the detention center, which makes it difficult for them to study the case file thoroughly.
Her lawyer argued that the law provides for as much time as needed to prepare for a case. Ingabire also mentioned that she only received the case file on July 5, 2025, while her lawyer received it on July 7, 2025.
The prosecution countered that the defense was deliberately delaying the proceedings, citing disagreements over the dates the file was received. They further argued that any shortcomings on the part of Ingabire's lawyer should not be blamed on the court. Other concerns raised by Ingabire included having her phone and laptop confiscated on several occasions.
However, Me Gatera Gashabana also informed the court that there is another lawyer from Kenya who will join the team on the side of Ingabire Victoire.
The court ultimately decided to adjourn the hearing to July 15, 2025. Ingabire Victoire is currently facing a pretrial detention hearing, having been arrested on June 19, 2025.
She is being prosecuted for allegedly forming a criminal group and planning actions intended to incite public disorder.
