President William Ruto Mourns Raila Odinga, Declares Seven Days of National Mourning
President William Ruto has announced the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, hailing him as a giant of democracy and declaring seven days of national mourning. Raila will be accorded a state funeral, with his remains set to be repatriated from India.
In a solemn and emotional address to the nation, President William Samoei Ruto has announced the death of Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and one of Africa’s most iconic democracy champions.
Speaking from State House, Nairobi, President Ruto described Odinga as “a giant of democracy, a fearless freedom fighter, and a tireless warrior for good governance.”
“Kenya, Africa, and the world mourn the passing of a giant,” said President Ruto. “Raila Amolo Odinga’s name will forever be etched in the story of our Republic a story of struggle, sacrifice, courage, and hope.”
A Life of Sacrifice and Service
The President paid glowing tribute to Raila Odinga’s decades-long struggle for justice, equity, and freedom. He recalled Odinga’s detentions, persecutions, and unwavering dedication to democratic ideals that helped shape Kenya’s modern political landscape.
“He endured persecution so that this nation might enjoy democracy,” Ruto noted. “His voice spoke for the oppressed, his conviction inspired generations, and his vision shaped the course of our history.”
Ruto described Odinga as “a once-in-a-generation leader” whose ideals transcended politics and whose legacy would define Kenya for years to come.
A Patriot and Pan-Africanist
President Ruto further hailed Raila as a patriot of uncommon courage and a Pan-Africanist who sought unity above personal gain.
“In his passing, we have lost a unifier who sought peace and unity above power and self-interest,” he said. “Raila Odinga was a servant of the people who gave his all to the promise of a better Kenya.”
National Mourning and State Funeral
To honour Odinga’s legacy, President Ruto declared a seven-day period of national mourning, during which flags will fly at half-mast across the Republic and all Kenyan embassies abroad. He also announced that the former Prime Minister will be accorded a state funeral with full honors.
A National Funeral Committee, co-chaired by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki and Cabinet Secretary Senator Oburu Odinga, has been established to coordinate the arrangements in consultation with the family.
Repatriation from India
President Ruto confirmed that the Government of India has agreed to assist with the repatriation of Raila Odinga’s remains following a request from the Kenyan government.
A high-level delegation, led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and including Cabinet Secretaries Kipchumba Murkomen, Hassan Joho, parliamentary leaders, and members of the Odinga family among them Mama Ida Odinga will travel to India immediately to oversee the process.
A Call for Unity
In his concluding remarks, President Ruto urged Kenyans to honour Raila Odinga’s memory by embracing peace and unity.
“We have lost a beacon of courage, a father of our democracy,” he said. “Let us come together, as he always urged us, not as rivals but as brothers and sisters bound by a shared destiny.”
He added:
“At every turning point in our national journey, Raila Odinga always put Kenya first. May his soul rest in eternal peace. May God comfort his family. May God bless Kenya.”
