Powerful Earthquake Strikes Northern Afghanistan, Killing Over 20
At least 20 people have died and many others injured after a strong earthquake hit northern Afghanistan early Monday, local authorities reported.
The quake struck near Mazar-e-Sharif, one of the region’s largest cities, home to around 500,000 residents.
Rescue teams rushed to affected areas, but efforts have been slowed by damaged infrastructure and unstable buildings. Officials warned that the death toll could rise as more victims are discovered and search operations continue.
Residents described terrifying moments as homes shook and debris fell, leaving many trapped or displaced. Local authorities urged the population to stay cautious, avoid damaged structures, and assist neighbors where possible.
Seismologists noted that early-season earthquakes in the region can have devastating effects due to densely populated areas and vulnerable construction. Humanitarian organizations are coordinating relief efforts, providing medical care, and distributing emergency supplies to the affected communities.
